Recommended Starting Path

New arrivals to the city will benefit from establishing their footing immediately. Follow this simple progression to secure your first resources:

  1. Deliver Grain: Start at the docks and complete 10 deliveries to earn your first Denarii.
  2. Buy a Bucket: Visit the street merchant in the market and purchase a water bucket with your coin.
  3. Gather Water: Head out to the fishing areas to collect raw saltwater.
  4. Distil Water: Use the processing stations in the city cookhouse to purify your saltwater into fresh water.
  5. Farm: Head to the farmland to harvest crops, using your fresh water to maintain the fertile fields.

Making Your First Coin

For new residents of Venusia Magna, the City Docks are the primary location to start earning coin. You have two distinct options available.

1. Grain Delivery

This is the most straightforward method to earn your first Denarius. Click on a sack of grain, and the Dockmaster will announce your delivery destination in local chat. Completing 10 deliveries rewards you with your first coin.

2. Exports

Rome demands daily shipments of goods from Venusia Magna, ranging from carrots to olive oil. Once you harvest or craft the required goods, sell them to the export dockhand for a substantial sum of Denarii.

Resource Gathering

1. Farming

Farming is a central function of the city. Head to the bottom of the main city street and pass through the two archways to locate the farmland. Here, you can harvest grapes, olives, carrots, and beets. Be aware that carrots and beets require watering after the plot is emptied.

2. Fishing

Locate the poster on the dock wall to acquire a fishing rod. Attach the rod and head to a dedicated fishing spot. Two excellent locations include the front of the dock near the boat, and the banks next to the farmland. Fish can be sold for coin or processed into food and oil.

3. Animal Resources

Near the farmland, you will find the butcher house where you can carve animals into slabs of meat. Additionally, on the main street near the small library, you can sit and milk a cow.

City Services and Survival

1. Cookhouse

Located on the main street, the city cookhouse is available to everyone from slaves to patricians. You need ingredients in your inventory to use the equipment. The facility features two primary types of equipment: cooking stoves for preparing meals to sate your hunger, and processing stations for purifying saltwater and rendering oil.

2. Butchering

Take the meat slabs gathered from the farm hut to the butcher stall in the market. Here, you portion them down into fresh beef and fresh pork, which are critical ingredients for cooking survival meals.

3. Baths

Your HUD displays a hygiene stat that you must monitor carefully. If this drops below a certain threshold, nearby residents will be able to smell you. To get clean, pay the entry fee to the guard at the main door of the city baths for one hour of access. Do not attempt to sneak in without paying; the guards will catch you immediately and throw you out.

Commerce and Interaction

1. Interactive NPCs

Venusia Magna features interactive NPCs scattered throughout the streets. If an NPC speaks as you walk past, touch them to open a dialog menu. You can ask questions to receive gossip, lore, tips, and deadly warnings.

2. Street Merchant

The merchant on the main street sells four main categories of items: food ingredients, wine-making materials, occupational supplies, and water buckets. Purchasing a bucket allows you to gather saltwater from the fishing locations, a highly useful resource for city living.

3. Healer

A highly skilled healer operates in one of the back alleys. She charges Denarii for her services but is well worth the cost. She can cure almost anything, including Febris and Pestis.

4. Banking

Carrying money in Ancient Rome was highly dangerous. Your HUD allows you to pickpocket others, meaning you are equally vulnerable to theft. It is highly recommended to use the city bank to protect your funds. You pay a small withdrawal fee, but the security is invaluable. Once you reach a certain status with a good standing account, you can take out a loan. Pay it back promptly to avoid severe consequences.

5. Gambling

The gamesmasters located in the back alley near the Tavern offer a risky way to make coin. Touch the games to place a bet. Different games feature different odds, and betting more Denarii increases your potential winnings.
